Tennesee GOV. Bill Lee signs a proclamation honoring early KKK member
Nathan Bedford Forrest. Despite backlash from the controversy, GOV. Bill Lee moved forward with the Proclamation, dubbing it "Nathan Bedford Forrest Day"
which caused Sen. Ted Cruz to tweet, "This Is Wrong".
Nathan Bedford Forrest was not only a member of the KKK but he was the first Grand Wizard and slave trader.
Most people are unaware that Tennessee is where the KKK was founded.
See reference below:
Rep. Steve Cohen Tweeted this response.
"We should not be honoring Nathan Bedford Forrest, the first Grand Wizard of the Ku Klux Klan and the perpetrator of the massacre at Fort Pillow. Gov. Lee should be bringing #Tennessee into the 21st century not backsliding into the 19th."
Tennessee has a long history of racism in its state and some Black people have claimed there are some areas that a Black person can't even drive through at night. The fact that the Governor of Tennessee would sign a proclamation honoring this racist scumbag is not only appalling but it says a lot about the state of Tennessee.
It seems as if the Black vote has become the key to the White House again. Trump proved in 2016, he did not need the Black vote or any other minorities to be real about it. Trump proved that all he needs is a bunch of pissed off White people, that feel like Obama was the worst thing that happened to White America.
Hillary Clinton loss the 2016, election because she was not able to click with Black people. Joe Biden has been put on the hot seat for his vote on busing in the '70s. Mayor Pete Buttigieg made an appearance at "Essence Festival" where he spoke on many issues concerning the Black Community. Mayor Pete Buttigieg is still trying to recover from the backlash coming from the Black community after a police officer shot a Black man without having his body cam on.
It has become clear that Republican candidates don't need the Black vote but the Democrats not only need the Black vote but they live and die by it.
U.S Senator and Presidential Candidate Kamala Harris has come under fire lately after she called out former Vice President Joe Biden during the Democratic Debates.
But she is not being criticized so much by the right-wing conservatives or even White Nationalists for that matter. Kamla Harris's worst critics have come from the Black community.
Harris has been called out online by a number of Black people for her record as a state prosecutor in California. Many have claimed that she has put her fair share of Black men in prison. To be fair to Kamala Harris she was a prosecutor and her job was to find evidence and present it to the courts. The Black community is unforgiving in this matter and have labeled Harris a sell-out.
Oddly enough, many political pundits are praising Harris as the winner of the first debate. Some pundits actually believe Kamala Harris can be a viable opponent to take on front runner Joe Biden. However, losing the Black community is not going to bode well for Kamala Harris and the more people dig into her background, Harris may end up more on the defensive than she originally planned to be.
Presidential Candidate Pete Buttigieg faces issues in the Black community after a White police officer shot and killed a Black man that was allegedly holding a knife but the police officers body camera was not on so no one can verify if the person killed actually had a knife or not. Black people were in an uproar last week. Mayor Buttigeg was interrupted while speaking at a forum by angry citizens who some yelling that there is racist police officer in the department.
“ We have tried but not succeeded in bringing diversity into our police department and we need help.” Mayor Pete Buttigeg said.
The Mayor's statement was met with mixed reaction by the mostly Black crowd at the forum. The people voicing their concerns were very matter of fact about there being racists in the city's police department while Mayor Buttigieg seems to suggest that the racists need to be sought out.
“If anyone that is on patrol shown to be a racist or to do something racist in a way that is substantiated, then it will be his last day on the street.” - Mayor Buttigieg.
The timing of this is not good for the 2020 Presidential hopeful who has been seen as a pretty squeaky clean candidate up until now.
Before the racists get a chance to attack this message, let me just say that most of the school shootings are committed by White students. Secondly, these Black students have a reason to fear teachers being armed. Teachers are not trained police officers and lack the ability to implement the use of force. It is even fair to say that a good number of police officers lack the ability to implement the use of force.
I am in favor of increased law enforcement presence in the schools but armed teachers is just a step too far.
